Donald Stewart

[rediger] Om Gordon
[Gordon] is a charming chief and companion and I am sure we shall work hand in hand. [...]
[I am confident] that we shall come out of the affair with flying colours and with God's blessing pull England out of a serious difficulty. We do not mean to fight but to negotiate and use our personal influence. I am convinced Gordon will come well out of the affair and pull the chestnuts out from the fire.
Stewart til Haddie Stewart, 24. januar 1884[1]
I am leaving tomorrow for Khartoum on what I will not disguise from you is a dangerous expedition. I am going in the company of a very distinguished officer, Major General Gordon, who is at the same time an Englishman of the very noblest type, on a mission of very considerable importance ... if we come to grief it will be in a good cause.
